Ursula loved the military and loved being a military wife..The title for the wives there was “The Waiting Wives.”  She was one of the last waiting wives to wear the white gloves.   Military life took them to Okinawa, Japan and then onto Fort Bragg in North Carolina where Gene served as a Green Baret.

Gene and Ursula lived simple conservative lives.  Gene and Ursula loved gardening and folk art.  Gene loved softball and played in the military.  Ursula loved to knit and sew.  She knitted many sweaters, hats and scarves for her family.  One of the best family vacation memories was a trip to Ashville, North Carolina to the Biltmore House and Gardens home of the Vanderbilt family.  Ursula's specialty dish for her family was German Rouladen with cabbage and fried potatoes.
