She attended a country school and Rogersville High School. She later worked at Obermans Garment Factory where soldier’s uniforms were made. She was 19 when she and Oliver Hale were married on September 30, 1942. They spent the first four years of their marriage in the Air Force stationed in Fort Worth, Texas. They then moved back to Springfield, where Oliver was superintendent for Glenstone Block Company, where he worked until retirement. Oliver passed away on March 2, 1998. Also preceding Allene in death were a sister, Jessie Williams, two brothers, Richard and Rev. James Eddings, a grandson Brent Hale; a great-granddaughter Mary Cowherd, a double nephew, Ronald Eddings, a daughter-in-law Kelly (Pollack) Hale, four sons-in-law Mack Sportsman, Jerry Moore, Dick Johnson, and Joe Crandall. Survivors include: eight children, Darlene Crandall, Leonard “Jody”, Leroy, Carolyn Johnson, Kathy Howard and her husband Chris, Melvin and wife Maria, Lloyd and wife Ericka, and Carl and wife Carolyn, 29 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Allene loved her flowers and always had beautiful gardens. Oliver bought her a quilting machine in 1980 and she made quilts for family and friends. She was still quilting at age 94.
