Macanna Murray

July 15, 1942 — November 19, 2025

Nixa

Macanna Sue Murray, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born on July 15, 1942, she grew up in Nixa, Missouri, where she remained throughout her life, building deep roots in the place and people she cherished. Macanna graduated from Drury College and went on to teach high school Spanish, sharing her love of language, culture, and connection with generations of students. Her passion for fairness and equal rights began early—in high school, she wrote an editorial championing students’ right to have a school dance, a small but powerful glimpse of the courage, justice, and joy that would define her life. She continued to live with compassion, inclusivity, and an open heart throughout her adult years. Her faith was a central part of her life. A devoted member of Nixa Christian Church, she loved attending services, teaching Sunday school, and nurturing spiritual community.

Macanna also embraced every opportunity to explore the world. She especially loved traveling to Mexico, where she felt a deep connection to the culture and people. One of the highlights of her life was an extraordinary journey to Kenya with the Women of the Christian Church—an experience that strengthened her faith, broadened her world, and brought her great joy.Macanna was an extraordinary wife to Gary, her partner in all things. Together they built a beautiful life filled with love, faith, and adventure. They traveled the world side by side, collecting memories and friendships wherever they went. At home, they cherished time with a close circle of wonderful friends, many evenings spent playing Rook, bridge, and sharing laughter that filled the room. Their marriage was a testimony to commitment, joy, and a deep and enduring companionship. She was also a fierce and loving supporter of her children, always encouraging them to dream boldly, work hard, and follow their own paths.

Mccanna is preceded in death by her parents, Mack L.D. and Averial McCroskey. She is survived by her devoted husband Gary Murray; her children Scott Murray, Jason and Ixchel Murray, and Mindy and Alex Sobel; her grandchildren Andre and Xavier Murray, and Anya and Hayden Sobel; her brother Larry McCroskey and his wife Jeannie; and her nieces Christi, Cami, and Casi McCroskey.

Macanna will be remembered for her boundless enthusiasm for life, her love of family and friends, her steadfast faith, her joyful presence, and her unforgettable pie-making. Her legacy lives on in every heart she touched.
