Lillian Elizabeth McCafferty

July 31, 1928 — March 7, 2024

Springfield

On March 7th, 2024 The “Larger Than Life Legend” Lillian Elizabeth McCafferty burst through the gates of Heaven with her wit and sense of humor. She was known for constantly cracking jokes and throwing out her famous one-liners. The very thought of her brings a smile to your face. Everywhere she went, you could rely on her to bring a fun and positive attitude. You never knew what inappropriate thing she would blurt out next!

Her grandmother and mother immigrated to the United States from Switzerland. She grew up in Romulus, Michigan with a very large family. She was the last one standing among eight hilarious Russell brothers and sisters.

In high school, she was an outstanding player on the girls basketball team. Her nickname was “Swish.”
Lillian was a very hard worker her whole life. As a young girl, she started working at her local corner drug store. She then went on to work as a telephone operator until she met and married Clell Bennie McCafferty. Within a few years, the family moved to Nixa, Missouri. It was there they opened their first of numerous businesses. First, they started a Furniture and Upholstery Store on Main Street. But sadly after the store burned down, the family joined the restaurant business. In Springfield, they built and opened the Monterey Restaurant, The Skylark, and the popular and hip Alibi Room Lounge.

Lillian also worked in the Venture bakery, Nixa school cafeterias, and McDonald's. She volunteered for any and every election held in Nixa, and every year at The Sucker Day festival, as she would prepare and serve the fish. Over the years Lillian enjoyed lots and lots of family trips, making sure to never miss a thing. She was always packed and ready to go, any place, and at any time, at the drop of a hat.

Preceding her in death were Clell Bennie, Tommy, Rueben, Jack, Robin, and Pam McCafferty.
She will be deeply missed by her children, daughter Bunny Hedgpeth, husband Kelly, and son Bennie Mccafferty, wife Leslie. Her many grandkids, great-grandkids, and nieces and nephews adored her, and will especially miss playing all types of games with her. She was adored by her community and many friends.

Lillian's Celebration of Life will be on May 18th at Adams Funeral Home in Nixa, Missouri. Visitation will be at 9:30 AM and service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Payne Cemetery immediately following the service.
