John Hernandez, age 84 of Ozark, passed away October 15, 2023.  He was born February 11, 1939 in Victoria, Texas, the son of Joe and Anita "Annie" (Mendoza) Hernandez.

Survivors include:  his wife of 49 years, Carole Hernandez of Ozark; his daughters, Stacy Hulm and husband Nick of Ozark, Dana Fite and husband Chuck of Brewster, Kansas, Tina Hogue and husband Dale of Dumas, Texas, Lisa Hernandez of Borger, Texas, and Rita Jackson and husband Jack of Amarillo, Texas; his grandchildren, Dallas Hord, Dalton Hord, Dylan Hord, Amber Kite, Angeleah Malone, Emily Rahorst, Kourtney Yankovich, Zachary Jackson, Aaron Hardy, Matthew Hogue, Kristal Hogue, and Chelsea Hogue; and many great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Carma Bontke and Patricia Rosas; a daughter, Sydney Hickerson; and a grandson, Timothy Lee Rahorst.

John was known as one of the friendliest people you would ever meet and always made those around him laugh. He attended Borger High School in Borger, Texas, and continued his friendships with his classmates throughout the years. He married Carole (Meek) on September 12, 1974 and both were employed by Phillips Petroleum Company. He loved children and youth and served as a bus driver for Fellowship Baptist church for many years, busing kids to church. He spent many Saturdays visiting the families of those children and formed life-long bonds with many of them. One of his favorite things in life was going to church camps and making memories with the church youth. John and Carole’s lives revolved around their church and ministering in music. John was a talented gospel soloist and Carole played the piano while he sang. Together they traveled, singing in churches, prisons, and choirs in Texas. When they retired, they moved to Ozark, Missouri and continued leading worship in area churches and singing gospel music in Branson, Missouri.

In addition to his love of music and ministry, John loved watching his grandsons, Dallas, Dalton and Dylan play sports. He regularly attended their games, and everyone knew when he was in the stands cheering them on. He was a great encourager to them and their biggest fan on and off the field. Even after his grandsons graduated high school, John was known and loved in the Ozark school system as a supporter of youth sports and cheered many students on throughout the years.

When he was young, while in Basic training for the Navy, John suffered a lifelong injury. Because he could not walk long distances due to a hip injury, he spent much time sitting on benches. John, who never knew a stranger, stuck up conversations with other bench-sitters and often talked with them about Jesus. He led several of them to Christ. He had a gift for making people feel seen and appreciated and he cared about the lives of others.

He was a loving and faithful husband to Carole and doted on her. He built a wonderful life with her that will bring many eternal rewards. He loved fellowshipping with his dear friends over good meals, discussing the latest sports stories, and family dinners with lively conversation. He loved all of his daughters and prayed for them. He loved phone calls with loved ones near and far, and he enjoyed teasing and laughing with his great grandchildren. His gift of humor made family gatherings full of laughter and he will be missed by all. Most of all, John loved Jesus. His life is a testimony to all that God dearly loves his children and he uses people like John to express that love. John was a member of Fremont Baptist Church.
