Jason R. Merrill-Barbel, age 49, of Nixa, was born on December 18, 1976, and passed away on February 25, 2026. He was the beloved son of Larry and Brenda Merrill-Barbel.
Jason lived a full and happy life, doing the things he loved most. He had the honor of carrying the Special Olympics torch during opening ceremonies in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. He graduated from Somonauk High School in Illinois in 1997 and worked faithfully at Open Door until 2012, and later at Beacon Group in Tucson, Arizona until his retirement in 2022.
Jason loved being outdoors and took great pride in lawn maintenance, a job he did exceptionally well. He enjoyed going to work and rarely missed a day. In his free time, he loved books, movies, music, dancing, Tae Kwon-Do, horseback riding, Xbox, and watching WWE every Friday night—always accompanied by pizza and pop.
Jason always had a smile on his face, treated everyone with kindness and respect, and was known for his excellent manners. He was a true joy and touched the lives of everyone he met.
He is survived by his sister, Andrea Barbel Novak and husband John; his brother, Brian D. Merrill; his aunts and uncles, Bruce Jr. and Patricia Merrill, Laura Chevrette, Glen and Patti Merrill, Sheila and Brian Kaddatz, and Sandra and Don Flesch; his faithful dog, Lucy; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who will deeply miss him.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bruce Sr. and Shirley Merrill; his cousin, Bruce Merrill III; and his uncle, Tim Chevrette.
Jason’s life was a beautiful reminder to find joy in the simple things, to treat others with kindness, and to always greet the world with a smile. He will be deeply missed and forever loved, and his light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
