James "Jim" Robert Johnston

James (Jim) Robert Johnston of Nixa, Missouri departed this life on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the age of 82. James was born in Bee Branch, Arkansas on October 9, 1939, to Arthur and Ivar (Leslie) Johnston. After graduating from Vilonia High School, he attended the University of Arkansas where he earned a Specialist in Education. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Johnnie Sue Sims and they were married on August 3,1962.  He served the public schools and community of Green Forest Arkansas for thirty-nine years, as a high school math teacher, High School Principal and finally as Superintendent.

James was a child of God and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield, MO where he served as a deacon. He also served as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Green Forest, AR.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Johnnie (Sims) Johnston, daughter Jan Johnston-Taylor and husband Charles of Springfield, MO; and son Jeff Johnston and wife Laurabeth (Watkins) Johnston of Fordland, MO.  His four grandchildren:  Megan (Taylor) Bailey and husband Brett of Springfield; Kelsey (Johnston) Mork and husband Mat of Bury Saint Edmunds, UK; Kolby (Johnston) Keller and husband Johnny of Newport News, VA; Sam Johnston and wife Allison (Avery) of St. Mary’s GA and three great grandchildren: Blake Mork, Nolan Bailey and James Mork were a special joy to him.

He was loved by a host of family and friends and returned that love to them - as well as to his Razorbacks, chocolate milkshakes, Elvis, good books, and a hearty laugh.

Special appreciation goes to the amazing staff at Mercy in Springfield, Mo, especially Dr. Shah, the McKenzies on both the day night shifts, Chaplain Chelsea and the entire COVID ward.  Their professionalism and compassion are inspirational.

In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to scholarship fund set up in Jim’s honor with Amstaff Bank in Green Forrest, AR.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. Family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Nixa.

Guestbook

Mr. Johnston was my math teacher also at GFHS, Class of 1968. He was our class sponsor, along with Marilyn Hawkins Bradley, who passed away recently. It is so sad to lose two of my teachers, who meant so much to me, so close together. I'm sure they are both celebrating in Heaven, as they were dedicated Christians & attended the same church in GF. I was honored to have been Mr. J's first secretary when he became Principal. It was wonderful to have him & Johnnie come to our 50th class reunion. I will always remember him fondly. I'm so glad I was able to bring my sister, Roberta Miller & her daughter, DeAnne Miller Parrish to his funeral. It was a lovely tribute. Love & prayers to Johnnie, Jeff, Jan & all his family.

Mr. Johnston was my math teacher in high school and later hired me to return to Green Forest to teach in elementary school during his distinguished career as superintendent of schools. Johnnie worked with my mother as a teacher's aide and they were our wonderful friends. Jim and I send our condolences and love to Johnnie, Jeff, Jan and family.
