Bertie Mae Barber

November 19, 1930 — May 3, 2022

Bertie McDaniel Barber, 91, of Nixa MO passed into the arms of the Lord on May 3, 2022, surrounded by her family. Bertie was born in Springfield MO on November 19, 1930. She was born the 7th of 9 children. Bertie will be remembered for her faith in God, and her love and dedication to her family and Community.

Bertie grew up around Grant Beach Park and graduated from Springfield High School (now Central) in 1948. On February 2, 1951, Bertie married Bob Barber of Nixa. They met at the Doling Park skating rink. They celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary in 2022.

Throughout Bertie’s life she gave to others. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years at Nixa Assembly of God Church, a Girl Scout leader and a Missionettes leader. She listened to third graders read for many years at Thomas Elementary, and she even participated in some drug trials. When Bob retired in 1992, they both became very active in the Nixa Senior Citizen Center. Over the years Bertie served variously as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In 2006 Bertie and Bob received the Nixa Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year award. They also served as the Grand Marshalls of the Sucker Day Parade. Bertie was also a member of the Christian County Senior Citizens Service Fund.

Bertie liked to travel and spend time at the lakes camping and boating. She loved Branson and Silver Dollar City. Bertie was close to her siblings and their families. Large family get-togethers came with most seasons.
Bertie was a Charter Member of the Nixa Assembly of God Church. She was very dedicated to God and attended church regularly, until the last 6 or 7 years of her life, when Alzheimer’s began to take over.

Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, Grover McDaniel and Katie Peters McDaniel, and all of her 6 brothers and 2 sisters, Curtis McDaniel, Leonard McDaniel, JB McDaniel, Jewel McDaniel, Junior McDaniel, Paul McDaniel, Daisy Tate, and Wilda Strain. Bertie is survived by her husband Bobby Gene Barber; her 3 children Kathryn Charron, Brenda Barber, son-in-law Steven Cochran, Terry Barber, daughter-in-law Linda Walter Barber; her 5 grandchildren David Charron, spouse Rachel Anderson Charron, Loren Babits, spouse Benjamin Breed, Hannah Barber, spouse Levi Runyon, Tori McIntosh, spouse Chase McIntosh, and Austin Barber; her 2 great grandchildren Addison May Charron and Nash Hardy Runyon; and her many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Manor at Elfindale and Compassus Hospice. They all did a wonderful job taking care of Bertie the last 8 months of her life.
